CHES graduate affiliates have access to several CHES funding opportunities to support their research with a focus on Human Evolution throughout their graduate career. The information below is intended for future applicants to understand what is available and to prepare their applications once nominated.

Please note that all grants require nominations from your graduate advisor to be eligible for application, and an official grant solicitation will be emailed to you directly. All CHES funds are disbursed through reimbursements (with the exception of booking travel directly through Rutgers), with funds available starting July 1st. Keep this in mind when planning your fieldwork budget. Grant awardee responsibilities are outlined in the award letters and include funding reports with an attached expense report (download Budget template for expense report here). For more information see the full grant solicitation for each grant in the drop down list below.

Eligibility: PhD or Masters Graduate Affiliate Member of CHES

Award amount: up to $1,000

This grant supports pilot research of junior graduate students and is usually the first CHES grant a new CHES PhD student will receive. This funding is meant to supplement other Rutgers funding including the Bigel and School of Graduate Studies Award.

Eligibility: 2nd-year PhD Graduate Affiliate. This award is for one or two second-year PhD students with particularly compelling research plans.

Award amount: up to $4,000

 This grant typically supports one or two second-year PhD students with particularly compelling research plans. All students applying for the Zelnick Award will also be automatically considered for the CHES Grant Award.

Past Zelnick Award Recipients

Eligibility: Only CHES Grad Affiliate Members who are ABD on or before the application deadline.

Award amount: up to $13,000

This grant supports PhD students who have advanced to candidacy to support their research. Priority is given to applicants who have already submitted grant proposal(s) to major external funding agencies (e.g., NSF, Leakey, and Wenner Gren).

Past Albert Fellows Recipients

Eligibility: Graduate Affiliate Member pursuing research related to human evolution.

Award amount: up to $5,000

This grant supports advanced Graduate students who are defending this year or defended within the Fiscal Year of the award. Graduate affiliates are nominated based on either excellence in their thesis, excellence in research, or excellence in publications.

Past Zelnick-Belzberg Recipients

Eligibility: This grant supports one or two undergraduate affiliate members of CHES to help support the research they are doing under the supervision of a CHES member/PI.

Award amount: up to $500

Past Lembersky Undergraduate Award Recipients

Eligibility: Graduate Affiliate Member who are presenting (poster or podium presentations) and travel to national conferences or workshops.

Award amount: up to $1,500

 There are two solicitations for these awards: one for conferences between July 1 -Dec 31; and then again for conferences January 1-June 30. Grad students are eligible to apply once a year and are required to submit their published abstract, link to the conference, and a budget. Eligible expenses include poster printing, travel, hotel, and per-diem for food.

Eligibility: PhD student who is at a point that is ≥1 year from the date advanced to candidacy; presenting a poster or lecture at a conference outside of the USA.

Award amount: up to $750

 There are two solicitations for these awards: one for conferences between July 1 -Dec 31; and then again for conferences January 1-June 30.
